Midnight Coffee House - Illustration Series
This “Save the Date” artwork and the characters drawn for the project were created for the continuation of the beatnik theme of the Art Council Wood Buffalo’s annual Excellence in Arts Awards. For this creative collateral (a “Save the Date” graphic, and the actual event poster) we revisited my original quick character sketch of Girl Holding Coffee Cup. Remember her?
Evolving from the above original sketch, I had changed her outfit, and also created facial features for her. She appears in the “Nominations Now Open” content, as a writer, along with two other artistic characters which you can see here.
Adapting this character for the Save the Date creative collateral, I altered her to be holding a coffee mug, as opposed to a notebook and pen, I mean, MIDNIGHT COFFEE HOUSE. Hello.
So this girl now has a coffee, AND A CAT. Lucky girl.
Not to mention, giant hair. A Rapunzel dream of mine.
But why is the hair so large? It’s to accommodate hand-drawn text for the title of the event, of course, (which for some reason was my original vision that came quickly to me when researching the haphazard and creative nature of the graphic design from the 1950s).
As I mentioned in my previous post, this design will be hand printed in a limited edition print series, so colour separation was something that was in the forefront while creating the artwork. Below you can see the three colour layers individually, and how they appear in their separations.
And here, the finished graphic for the Save the Date for 2019 Annual Arts in Excellence Awards with textured background and content added!
